As usual, Taylor Swift doesn’t confirm who her lyrics are about. However, there are many indications that Harry was her main inspiration for the 1989 album. 1989 was released on October 27, 2014, reinforcing fan speculation that Taylor wrote all of her songs from the pop album during and after the romance. One of the most obvious references is to “style”, a literal play on Harry’s last name.
Other 1989 songs rumored to be about Harry include “I Know Places” and “Out of the Woods”. Both tracks tell a similar story about a relationship that seems doomed from the start. However, the subjects of the song are willing to fight the investigation to make it a success, even though they know it will end badly. It certainly sounds like Taylor and Harry, who have been the subject of heavy media attention despite being together for less than a year. “Out of the Woods” also makes direct reference to Harry’s “paper airplane” necklace and the stitches he received on his forehead after a snowmobiling accident while they were together.
In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Taylor Swift said that “I Wish You Were” was about an ex who bought a house near hers.
